About Kana Type

A game-based way to actually learn a script, not just memorize it.

What Kana Type is today

Kana Type is a free browser game that teaches Japanese hiragana and katakana. Characters fall down the screen, and you type the romaji before they reach the bottom - turning script recognition into a fast, reflexive skill instead of a flashcard you passively re-read. It runs entirely in the browser: no download, no account required to start.

Why typing, not flashcards

Most beginner tools for hiragana and katakana are flashcard apps or spaced-repetition decks - good for recognition, but passive. Kana Type asks you to produce the right answer under light time pressure, closer to how you'll eventually need to read kana in the wild: quickly, without stopping to think. Learning Mode still gives you a structured, no-pressure way to study a new batch of characters first - the timed gameplay is there once you're ready to build speed.

Where we're headed

Japanese hiragana and katakana are live today. Tamil and Hindi practice - full character sets, curricula, and audio - are already built behind the scenes and coming soon, extending the same typing-based approach to more of the world's writing systems. The goal is a single, consistent way to build real reading and typing fluency in any script, not just Japanese.

Cost

Kana Type is free to start. A one-time payment unlocks unlimited play beyond the free levels - no subscription, ever.
